2013 BET AWARDS Re-Cap

The airways, social media sites, and blogs are still buzzing after the 2013 BET awards show. This year’s host and occasional comedic relief was none other than Chris Tucker. BET’s biggest night of the year promised sizzling performances as usual, special honorees, touching tributes; unforgettable antics by your favorite celebs and of course some gold hardware.
Headlining one of the top awards of the night was Miguel, who apparently has rebounded from his bad leg drop moment in concert. Miguel would take home the “Best Male R&B/Pop” award. Talk about a confidence booster, the nominees in this prestigious category every year are typically names like Usher, Chris Brown, Neyo, and Bruno Mars, this definitely places Miguel some elite company.

In the female bracket for this award, I don’t think there was any question of who would be snatching this one up, Rihanna. Bad girl Ri Ri has certainly been on top of the game as of late, a little controversial at times but nothing keeping her off the top of the charts. I’m sure Gaga and Bey are anxious to even up the competition real soon.

It’s hard to find a legit winner every year for best new artist because most artists have been on the scene for a while just not making much noise or by the time this award rolls around there just simply not new anymore. Well this year you can throw that out the window. Kendrick Lamar was not only the clear cut winner for “Best New Artist” but also took home the “Best Male Hip-Hop” artist as well. Lamar, a Cali native, has arguably been the best MC in the game this year thus far. With such a unique style heard in singles like “poetic justice” and now in one of the most classiest and talked about performances of BET history. Kendrick and the neo-soulful Erykah Badu made a surprise poetic like collaboration to his track “don’t kill my vibe”. The tandem blended together smoothly for an even better rendition of the original record.
The Pink bombshell Nicki Minaj would bring home some hardware at the BET awards as well. Nicki won for “Best Female Hip-Hop” artist.  Not too many pleased with Minaj’s style of music but the numbers don’t lie, in fact they’ve been pretty impressive and let’s face it this Barbie’s kind of in a league by herself right now. “Competition? I don’t C.N.E”
Her YMCMB counterpart Drake wouldn’t make an appearance this year without taken home a little gold himself. Drizzy’s “started from the bottom” joint won for “Best Video of the year”. Either everybody could relate or the video was just that damn good!

Getting away from Music a bit, this year’s “Best Actor” and “Best Actress awards go to Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington. Foxx starred in the controversial blockbuster “Django” directed by Quentin Tarantino. It’s a story featuring Foxx as a slave looking for freedom and revenge. Regardless of which way you angle the thumb for this one, it was sort of a big deal. Kerry Washington’s big splashed this year wasn’t at the box office it was on cable television once a week. It’s some show called “Scandal” or something like that, and it’s only like the number 1 watched show on television right now! Right ladies? Washington plays the part of Olivia Pope on the show; it’s hard to clarify what her title is but she’s dam good at it and ratings were through the roof on Tuesday nights.

The stage was rocked once again this year at the BET awards. Everyone was on the edge of their seats to see who was going to do what and how. Mr. Heart throb, Robin Thicke was without question one of the most highly anticipated performances of the night. Thicke’s single “Blurr the lines” is the number song in the country right now, for good reason.

After a long vacation from making records, Justin Timberlake graced the audience with such a suave performance only he is accustom to delivering. In case you’ve been under a rock, Timberlake has been away on mogul like ventures but is back from the hiatus and in the top 5 on the billboard with his single “Suit and Tie.”
NC was in the building, highly represented to the fullest. Rapper, J.Cole dropped a few bars on his single “Power Trip”. Cole has a newly released album and it is creating quite a stir with excellent reviews. Since his emergence onto the scene J.Cole has indeed rose to the occasion, has not disappointed  and this summer just might be another “Cole world”!
Uncle Charlie, last name Wilson or as we like to call him the south “Cholly”, left a little funk on the stage. As one of the leaders of the old school and pioneers, Charlie Wilson was this year’s BET honoree. The legend performed a collection of his jams, old and new and showed us exactly why we still learn from the old school.
For more recap of the winners and performances visit BET.com or tune in for the encore showing on July 2nd @ 6:30 ET/5:30 CT.
