Monday Morning Coffee

Lance Armstrong
America’s cycling legend Lance Armstrong, has been known for being a fighter but he recently threw in the towel. The 7 time tour de France champion has officially decided to end all fights against the USADA and their doping allegations. “I’m at peace now more than ever” says Armstrong, who has been battling accusations of doping for a few years now. These accusations are not conclusive however after Lances retreat this past week, the USADA decided that was enough to strip him of all tour de France trophies and a lifetime cycling ban. Lance Armstrong has been an inspiration to Cancer survivors around the world. Endorsers like Nike say they’re sticking by Lance and the “Livestrong” foundation, and so far fans and fellow professional athletes are standing behind Lance as well. In wake of the USADA decision, he has been stripped of all the trophies but his heroic reputation will forever precede him.

Neil Armstrong
The first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong passed away at the age of 82 Saturday morning. Neil will forever be known for his walk and speech on the moon, “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The historic walk occurred on July 20th in 1969. Since then NASA has been ahead of the curb when it comes to world space competition thanks greatly in part to the pioneering of Armstrong. After that famous mission, Armstrong was a coordinator and helped manage research and technology for NASA. In 1971 he would resign and begin teaching engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He always maintained humble and never sought to be recognized in his efforts for walking on the moon, which was partly the reason for his resignation from NASA. “I am very privileged to live in that thin slice of history where we changed how man looks at himself and what he might become and where he might go.” –Neil Atrmstrong

Obama vs Romney
With a million polls in full force, obviously there are conflicting reports on precise numbers; however, they’re all pretty much saying the same thing.  So as it stands now with 72 days left:
OBAMA :  50%
ROMNEY:  44%

Andrew Luck vs Robert Griffith III
After a long awaited matchup the Redskins would beat the colts 30-17, but which rookie would shine the most in the showdown. Comparing the numbers no one seemed to have an edge or an overwhelmingly better game. Skins QB, Robert Griffith would pass for 11 completions on 17 throws, for 74 yards and one impressive cross the body redzone td pass. Colts QB, Andrew Luck would tally 14 completions on 23 thrown, for a total of 151 yards and one veteran like 30 yard touchdown strike. Griffith and Luck both looked like poised quarterbacks in their showdown but one clearly looked like he was ready for the big leagues. 14 for 23 and 151 yards is not bad for a rookie in preseason, but the precision passing by Andrew Luck is what sets him apart from not only Griffith but other rookie Quarterbacks. He has been dawn the best pure pocket passer in college football since his junior year, and it’s definitely starting to show why. With a long season ahead, they both will get better as time goes on but right now give the edge to Luck.

Hurricane Isaac
The hurricane scares have died down a bit over the last few years but Mother Nature never rest.  Hurricane Isaac thus far has made his presence felt in the Caribbean. Isaac has yielded considerable damage for the islands and so far the death toll for Hati is 9, a country who is still reeling from hurricane damage from years past. The storm is traveling through the Caribbean west of Florida and up through the recently storm familiar territory of Louisiana and Mississippi. Weathermen have studied the storm and have predicted a possible category 3 with 100 miles per hour winds. A state of emergency has been issued for Louisiana. The course of the hurricane is not an unusual one but citizens are hoping it doesn’t leave the usual destruction.

NYC Empire state building shooter
As if we haven’t had enough public shooting sprees this year, another disgruntle man opens fire killing innocent people. This time the shooting spree was in New York City at the Empire State building of all places. 53 year old Jeffrey Johnson, is described by neighbors as sweet and quiet, he was anything but, after killing an ex co- worker and wounding 9 others. Johnson was a t-shirt designer who was fired last year, like many others, the company was facing tough times. This onslaught was a revenge killing for a former co-worker who was still employed and Johnson obviously had a problem with. After killing the ex-co-worker, police would let off 16 rounds, 5 of which to the head of Johnson, subsequently killing him.

August the deadliest month for Syria
War in the Middle East continues in Syria this past weekend, with Saturday being the worst day in the 17 month crisis. Opposition activist have reported that 330 people were killed Saturday during another day of war in Syria. With such a massacre of a day, this brings the death toll nearly to 3,700 in Syria. Unfortunately the majority of the body count is innocent civilians. Reports also say the war is only intensifying and with 10 days left in August we can expect that death toll to rise closer to 400 with no end in sight.

IAMTHEINFLUENC "Sparkle" Review

Hitting the theatres this weekend was “Sparkle”, the anticipated film features Whitney Houston in her last project. Going up against tough competition this week at the box office, the 1976 remake featured a mix of a young and experienced cast. Taking the torch of the lead role was singer and American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, who played the movie’s title “Sparkle”. The male supporting actors were veteran actors Derek Luke, who played the groups manager and comedian, Mike Epps who played a famous funny T.V personality. Along with Sparks, the other leading ladies in the film were Tika Sumpter and Carmen Ejogo. Sumpter and Ejogo play “Sister” and “Dolores” both have intricate and distinct roles in the plot. The talented young casted script is highlighted by the legendary finale of Whitney Houston which makes for a theatre of anticipation. 23 year old Jordin Sparks has made herself right at home on television and on radio’s across the nation, in Sparkle she takes her first shot at the big screen. As the lead the star in the film, she assumes the role of an innocent girl who initially lives out her dreams through her older sister. Derek Luke, who plays “Stix”, comes into town and is impressed by the wonderful singing of “Sister” (Carmen Ejogo) and offers the sisters a chance at stardom. Completing the trio is “Dolores” played by Tika Sumpter, the goal driven sister is determined to sing her way into medschool. Throughout the movie, the sisters are in fear of their strict Christian mother “Emma”, played by the late queen of pop Whitney Houston. Houston plays a role that many strong mothers can relate to, toggling between her religious beliefs and tender love and care of a mother. The hilarious punch lines of “Satin Struthers” played by comedian Mike Epps, adds balance to the storyline as the conflicts unfold. As a spin off remake of the 1976 “Sparkle”, director Salim Akil captured the essence of the 1960’s with new age appeal. Akil also emphasized the great roar of the Motown era as well as the swirling negativity of the Detroit the riots. Based off the charismatic group “The Supremes”, Sparkle and her sisters each add their own attribute, while battling mommy dearests Emma. This is a feel good story compiled with the occasional comedy antic and parenting struggle families everywhere can relate to. Some critics are saying the film is a bit cliché, but overall most are labeling the film an epic must see.

It's that time the numbers are in. The "Boss" himself Rick Ross has came in at #1 according to www.billboard.com . Which makes it his 4th album to debut at #1.... Yes the "Boss" is living up to his name. Selling 218,000 surpassing his last his #1 album Trilla which sold 198,000 in 2008. The title "God Forgives I Don't " which some say is controversial has made its mark in the books and doesn't look to be slowing down. Selling over 90,000 digital copies it also tops the digital charts at #1. Even more interesting Ross has officially had more #1 albums to debut at #1 than Lil Wayne and Snoop Dog. Wow, Rozay u doing ya thang. Wayne and Snoop both only have 3 to go #1 on the first week. Leading those numbers is non other than Jay Z, with 12 week one debuts at #1.
