Today's Athletes Prone to Trouble

In the last few years we are seeing professional athletes become more accustom to un-sportsman like conduct outside of the sports stadiums rather than inside. Professional athletes are getting in trouble and facing legal penalties more than ever. Take the National Football League for example, 10 years ago in 2002, the NFL had just over 30 players arrested that whole year, this summer alone we saw 25 arrests. Many of which were merely misdemeanors, and some as simple as traffic conviction’s. However minute the crime, the fact remains the numbers have increased at an alarming rate making this a national epidemic in all of professional sports. One can only wonder why and what the mentality is for today’s athletes who are undoubtedly living carefree lifestyles. Along with the high dollar check and introduction into a life where very few things are impossible, most professional leagues in the United States require there first year athletes to take something similar to life courses. Leagues such as the NFL have what they call a “rookie symposium.” It’s sort of a code of ethics and crash course on handling your new found super stardom as a 6 and 7 figure earning athlete. Among the things being taught in the course are longevity in the league, money management, and learning to steer clear of trouble. They preach that you may have it all now but you are not untouchable and can’t hide from anyone. Under the tutelage of this symposium, most players follow suit and take heed while some miss the message completely. Lately not only are first year players falling victim to the real world of trouble, some are 5 to 8 year veterans. One has to wonder with the proper courses in place in these professional leagues, where do the players go wrong? Some argue that these athletes are targeted by the media and law enforcement while and others say “hey were no different from any other civilian, we make mistakes too.” Should professional athletes be held to a higher standard in society? In 1993 Charles Barkley did a controversial television commercial "I am not a role model." In the infamous Nike commercial, Barkley would also go on to state “I'm not a role model... Just because I dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids.” By this, Charles meant it wasn’t his job to live accordingly to the standard of a role model for the youth. While some take on that duty, it was not his responsibility. The commercial sparked a lot of discussion around the nation and fueled many prominent figures to speak out. Some agreed, others disagreed and lashed out at Barkley, feeling that he was selfish, insensitive and missing the bigger picture. These days I'm sure more and more athlete’s side with Barkley and his theory. Perhaps these athletes are ordinary people like you and me; however, they possess extraordinary power that yields a significant impact on society. With this power comes great responsibility and so, shouldn't there be a sense of moral obligation to walk upstanding in a spotlight such as a professional athlete? Is it not a small price to pay for the multi-million dollar contracts and the undying love of millions fans? Whether professional athletes like it or not they are propped up on a pedestal that sits just below a microscope! At the end of the day these athletes are more than just a name on the back of a jersey, their chosen role models. While some assume the role, most only aspire to be great athletes in their respective sport. Unfortunately they can’t promise the same MVP performance outside of the sport.

" USA struggles early but finishes off France"

The USA’s basketball team took the court for the first time in these 2012 London Games. Their first opponent was France, who is led by NBA players Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, Mickel Pietrus and Ronnie Turiaf. On paper this is supposed to be an easy test for the USA however, early on they would make it a harder than it needed to be. A host of things did not go the Americans way in the opening quarter. They played stagnant 1 on 1 basketball, and were out of sync. Free throw shooting and early foul trouble would only give them a 1 point lead after the first quarter. France would capitalize on the sloppy play of USA and hit a 3 pointer to take the moment into the 2nd quarter. The stat line was quite atrocious for both teams early on but the most impressive one was the French leading the Americans 10 to 2 on the offensive boards. France clearly exposed the lack of post presence of the USA. Despite a horrible shooting percentage the USA would find a little bit of momentum and offense at the half way point of the 2nd quarter. Kevin Durant would finally begin connecting from long range. Kobe Bryant as well would chime in with a couple from downtown extending the gap just a bit. France who seemingly had the answer in the first would fail to score and punish team USA in there weaker areas in the 2nd. Along with the falling 3 point baskets, Lebron James and Kobe Bryant would make a series of appearances at the free throw line increasing the lead. Although there was very little consistency from the USA squad, their talent alone would help them score in spurts and France could not find a rhythm to get back into the game. At the half the USA had only landed 17 of their 43 shots taken but still managed to seize a 52 to 36 lead over the Tony Parker and French. Tony Parker, who undoubtedly is not the same player from the 2008 Beijing games, definitely looked at a disadvantage and didn’t seem at 100 percent. Parker a few months back suffered a scratched retina after a he was caught in the middle of flying bottles at a New York night club. Parker did all he could when he could but it was not enough as the Americans would key in on him and force other players to make shots. Not only would they force Frances role players to step up they would start to force turnovers as well. In the 3rd period USA would get lose with easy transition and fast break buckets. For the first time in the game they were having fun and begin to play carefree basketball. The lead would continue to extend to almost 30 at one time and the game would conclude with a 98 to 71 victory for team USA. Kevin Durant would lead all scorers with 22 points, Lebron James would only tally 9 points but also had 8 rebounds and 5 assist. . Looking forward to the USA’s schedule, there are certainly some easy games ahead but there are indeed a few concerns as well. There is no question that this team is unselfish and can play team ball however at times they seem out of sync and players are often in search of their appropriate role. Coming in to the camp, players like Kobe and Durant have conceded there usual scoring duties to the MVP Lebron James but ultimately to win gold, everyone has to assume roles their not use to. Since the opening exhibition games, the 6’9” Kevin Durant has made a living beyond the arc and the victory over France was no different. The NBA scoring champ will need to convert to simply a spot up wing and top of the key shooter unless he has a mismatch in man to man defense. The biggest hurtle the Americans will have to face is overcoming an undersized frontcourt. There is clearly no legitimate center on this Olympic team and the absence of Dwight Howard and power forward Chris Bosh is a tremendous loss. While Tyson Chandler, Andre Ilgoudala, and Kevin Love at times may suffice, to help fill the void they will have to implement Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony occasionally in the paint. Both will have to bang down low once they leave pool play and enter the quarterfinals against more formidable opponents such as Spain and Argentina. Throwing different defensive looks at the other Olympic teams will be the key to London gold.

Brees and Saints make a DEAL "100 mill"

After weeks of deliberating between Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, a deal was finally agreed upon on both sides. Saints sign Quarterback Drew Brees to a mammoth 5 year $100 million dollar deal. Brees will get a huge chunk of that money in this upcoming season, a chunk worth $40 mil. The contract stipulates that $60 million is guaranteed, which totals Brees’s season earnings to $20 million a year making him the highest paid player annually in NFL history. As soon as the deal was finalized Brees tweeted saying “Deal is done! Love you Who Dat Nation, see you soon!” Last season was a historic and record breaking season for Drew Brees, the Saints just as everyone figured, broke the bank for their star and rightfully so. As IAMTHEINFLUENCE reported last month in an earlier article “what’s the deal”(http://www.iamtheinfluenc.com/2012/06/whats-deal.html) Brees’s statistics were something straight from a video game. He passed for an astounding 5,476 yards, beating out Pats QB Tom Brady by 241 yards. Also Brees’s landed 468 completions, and 46 of them made it across the goal line. He would take the quarterback triple crown, along with finishing tops in completion percentage and runner up in passer rating to only Aaron Rodgers. If these aren’t $100 million dollar numbers, I don’t know what would be. Coming off a rocky off season surrounded by the bounty controversy, the expectation for Brees and the Saints won’t exactly be as high. With their head coach sidelined due to suspension and host of other players suspended, winning games and making the playoffs will be the ultimate goal this season. There will be a lot of player personnel changes and other uncertainties but with Brees now secured at the helm, Saints staff will sleep a lot easier leading up to training camp. Serena Wins at

Around a year ago during this time, the uncertainty of tennis star Serena Willaims career was hanging in the balance. After a sudden illness that could of nearly killed her, no one knew if she would make a recovery back to tennis let alone the top. Well I think we can put all the speculation to rest now. She has returned to glory emphatically, winning her 14th grand slam. This would be Serena’s 5th title at Wimbledon and probably one her most impressive. For her first match at the 2012 Wimbledon, Serena would square off against Barbora Strýcovás. She is a 26yr old from the Czech Republic, who is relatively small in stature but has WTA ranking of 39 for good reason. Williams would polish off the Czech quite easily beating her 6-2, 6-4. Her next match would also go smoothly but the following one would not be a walk in the park. Serena faced Zheng Jie, a 29yr old Chinese player who is considered one of the best in the world and at one point held a ranking of 15th. Zheng would take the first set from Williams in a battle she won in 7. A rally by Serena would even things up and make it a great dual to watch. The next set was no different it would be an absolutely cat fight to the end. Both fought tooth and nail for every point but Serena would outlast Zheng 9-7. She would win the next match against the unranked Shvediova in 3 as well. Getting to the finals would actually be easier than previous matches. She would knock off 4th ranked 22yr old phenom Petra Kvitová in 2 in the quarters. Also in 2 sets, she would defeat 2nd ranked Victoria Azarenkan in the semifinals. Posed and ready for the finals, Serena would meet Agnieszka Radwańska, who before the finals had really torn through each opponent handedly. Radwanska would nearly beat every woman at Wimbledon in 2 sets for the exception of Maria Kirilenko and Serena of course. The final match would start as expected, back and forth counter play. Both would eventually settle into strategic play and Radwanska would get the best of Williams early on. It took a while but the 30yr old Serena gained her composure and the momentum. She used what carried her the whole tournament, her aces and they were unstoppable. She smashed a women’s record of 102 aces at Wimbledon. In the last set she was relentless with the ace, which allowed her to close out with a 6-2 victory and the Rosewater dish. It’s been a long road back for Serena Williams. A road that started with a severe foot injury and a pulmonary embolism that was nearly fatal. Taking some time away from the sport has been vital, on and off court. Since then she has regained her confidence, her strength and a trophy to add to the mantle.

2012 BET AWARDS RE-CAP

Ok so it’s safe to say this year’s BET awards did not disappoint. A day later there is definitely a whole lot to discuss in the barbershops and salons! This year hosted by one of the most hilarious and impressive actors to ever be on the big screen, Samuel L. Jackson. The nights location took place at the shrine auditorium in L.A. Many highlights left a lasting impression on viewers everywhere. There was a touching tribute to the queen of pop along with the usual unforgettable performances. As always it was a star studded event that packed a full house. Samuel Jackson was a colorful host of the event, adding some funny to the show with his on tidbits and a remake of N*ggas in Paris. After a great opening, Kanye’s group Good music would get things live in full effect with a big performance. The group features Ye, 2 chainz, Push T, and Big Sean. They would emerge from a glamorous Lamborghini that appeared on stage surprising everyone in the building. The squad performed the hit song “Mercy”, and everybody knew the lyrics including all the expletives. Other performances would include a return by R&B legend, Diangelo. Diangleo would bring back the sexy and do what fans are were to seeing from him back in the days. Also on the R&B tip would be performances by Usher and Chris Brown. Mr. Raymond and Chris Breezy would both get all the ladies out their seats with their usual sex appeal and number of dance moves. The biggest baddest hip hop group would grace the stage later on in the night, the Maybach music group. Ricky Rozay, Meek Mill, and Wale would all do their thing at the BET awards this year. The group just this week dropped the hottest and most anticipated album in the country, “Self Made2”. Nicki Minaj would bring the junk in trunk for her performance, joining her was rapper 2Chainz for the single “Beez in the trap”. Arguably the best performance of the night was the old school fellas of Maze. The legendary band would sing a couple of their hit songs including their biggest ever featuring Frankie Beverly, “Before I let go”. It was truly a treat for older gentlemen in the audience such as comedian Cedric the Entertainer. This year there was a lot of competition in many categories, nobody was snubbed and the chips could of fell either in each category. Best female R&B category was the definition of competition. The usual suspects of Beyonce and Rihanna would battle against the queen, Mary J, also Melonie Fiona and Marsha Ambrosius. New mommy Beyonce would take home the crown. Nicki Minaj would knock off Trina and Diamond to get the female Hip Hop award; I don’t think there was any disputing that one at all. Ironically 2 of the biggest names in the game that are beefing would both take home awards. Chris Brown would win the male R&B artist of the year and Drake would win make hip hop artist of the year, certainly well earned by both artist. Other notable wins were best video with Jay and Yeezy for “Otis” and the duo would also win best group as well. Also best actor Kevin Hart no shocker. Big Sean is the year’s best new artist and the young stars award would go to Diggy Simmons. The moment of the night where most of every was choked up and fighting back tears was the tribute to the queen of pop, Whitney Houston. For years the soulful voice of Whitney would land her at the top of the charts and would leave stages scintillating. Away from the music, the singer had her ups and downs but was still loved by many at the time of her demise. This year BET paid homage to her greatness and impact she left on music. Her mother Cissy Houston would grace the stage and give heart felt celebration of life for her daughter. Stars such as Mariah Carey would give their thoughts on the legend and eyonce would dedicate her award to Whitney, the woman who paved the way for singers like herself.
